The Well We had heard that there had been a well or tank with domed brick
top at the rear of the house but there was no obvious evidence. In 2009 we found and excavated the
remains of the well. It is of
double brick construction using sandstock bricks
and rendered on the inside. The
brick dome which would have been above ground level is missing. The well was probably constructed in
the 1870s or 1880s. The well had been filled in over many years with household
rubbish and many datable artefacts have been recovered such as the French
coins illustrated (dates: 1921, 1932, 1934), local coins, pipe with silver
band (date: 1929) and a silver handbrush with
owners initials (date: 1913). The
actual period over which the well was filled is shown by the large number of
beer bottles, mostly having dates on the base. These dates range from 1937 to 1960.
Most items are in broken or poor condition but a large number of bottles of
many types were intact. The reason why the well was abandoned may have been due to tree
roots penetrating the walls causing leakage or collapse of the dome. < The image depicts
a well of similar construction We are still keeping an eye out for the stone bath rumoured to
have been in the garden.
